Except for DCTs are actually really cool. I plan to swap my 4L60e with a Porsche PDK or if that’s too expensive I will settle with a 10L 90 .

I love it! Where can I get one?

Choosing a manual transmission nowadays has nothing to do with performance. Good m odern automatic transmissions are faster than even the fastest human. The only reason to get the stick shift version of a car is because you enjoy using a manual transmissi on. Which is fine, if that’s what you want.

Brilliant tweet.

Good luck with that Porsche PDK swap. And I mean that sincerely, I think that would be really cool to see. But I think it’s going to be a bear to get it wired up and tuned to play nice with a small block. I wonder if it needs ECU inputs to function (predictive shifting based on engine loading, throttle position, etc.)? It may be virtually impossible without swapping in a Panamera V8, or somehow making that ECU run your engine so it can chat with the trans controller. Unless someone makes a standalone controller, but I’m not aware of one existing.
A 10L90 would probably be almost a bolt on affair.

I think it’s from Top Gear? I found it in an image search.

But DCTs aren’t slushboxes .

I am truly grateful for whoever invented the first POS torque converter automatic, as bad as it must have been, because that means that it, and all the shitty three and four speed units since, paved the road to the modern automatic transmission that I get to drive now. Without it, I’d have a lousy time trying to drive, and I like driving.
That said, I am also glad that manuals are still around and asked for enough to not become extinct. They teach a skill set that I think is good for young drivers to learn, and it’s good that people have the choice.

“Good” is not uni versal.
Could I interest you in a WRX with a CVT?

Yeah it’s going to be a challenge to make the PDK work with the small block winch is why I plan on having the 10L90 as a fall back. If things don’t work out with the PDK I will just sell it because I have no intention of Panamera swapping it since I love chevy small blocks. I have heard of people LS swapping 911s but I am unsure whether those 911s have a PDK.

I agree with archduke. It’s not a manual but it’s certainly not a salad spinner laden slush box

Torque converters literally rob power. It takes more energy to spin that salad spinner full of ATF. Dual clutch is obviously different

Be that as it may, most modern performance cars that offer torque converter automatics are faster than their manual transmission versions.
So yes, the shirt is technically correct, but the old “the automatic is slower” complaint no longer applies in most cases.

My beloved ‘66 Thunderbird has a three-speed slushbox. It doesn’t change gears until 35 mph, at which point it goes CLUNK, the car lurches, and the engine finally calms down. In theory, the car has similar horsepower to several different muscle cars and it weighs about the same as well, but thanks to the transmission, it does 0-60 in a blistering 11 seconds. Unless you have one with the 428, in which case it takes 9 seconds. I’m not going to convert it to manual, but yeah, those old automatics are not great.

Sounds like there’s something amiss in the valve body of that C6. Or is your car one of the early build cars with the Cruise-O-Matic? My best bud in high school had a ‘66 Galaxie 7 Litre with the Toploader trans. What a fun car that was; would love to have one now.

Wouldn’t be surprised if there’s something wrong with the transmission, but it still shifts gears and automatic transmissions are complicated, so I think I can live with it for the moment. I’m not sure which transmission mine has, as I thought they were all the same. My car was first sold in January of 1966, so maybe it’s one of the early build cars.
